You’ve found the perfect lamp for your living room, bedroom, hallway or home office and it’s time to choose the right shade. With so many shapes, fabrics, colours and styles, it’s hard to select just one! Freedom has a wide variety of gorgeous lamp shades for floor lamps and table lamps.

Before you start browsing, do a few quick measurements to understand which size and shape of shade you need for your base. Round bases usually look better with rounder shades and angular or square bases with square ones – but there are exceptions. Your shade should be about two thirds of the height of your base. The widest part of your shade should be an inch or so wider than your base. Keep in mind where your lamp is going to live. Tall lamps can overwhelm small pedestals or accent tables, so remember the position when considering the entire piece.

The most common shade shapes are drum and tapered. Drum lamp shades have a cylindrical shape, which can update an older light base and give a contemporary feel to the room. Tapered shades are the more traditional lamp shade shape and work well on both table and standing lamps. These shades work well in both modern and classic rooms, especially when boasting a bold pattern.

Think about the use of your lamp too. If your lamp is largely functional and needs to give light for reading or warming up a room, choose a pale or translucent shade.
