Cushions & Decor: Covers to Covet - 5 Ways to Win with Cushion Combinations

Beautifully arranged cushions are much more than just an afterthought. Follow these guidelines for that gorgeous interior magazine finish.

Shape Shifters
Throw the matching mentality out of the window when it comes to size and shape. Cushions create visual interest when they’re not all the same. Try two large ones like our Charle 55 x 55 cushion and couple them with slightly smaller versions like the Zabel 45 x 45. This combination in neutral colours is great for a smart couch. Add a final rectangular shape like the Cecili 40 x 60 in the centre to complete the look.

Stripes and Solids
When you play with shape, experiment with prints and textures too. Bold decisions like pairing stripes with checks and patterns with florals creates a contemporary look that’s very stylish. Ensure one or two of the colours used are complementary or pick up on a dominant theme colour. For example, if you’re working with a sand coloured couch, choose corals, bright pinks, teals and even purple. These pops of colour and design will give your base palate character. If you would like a more subtle theme, try a combination of the Broadway Cushion in Seafoam, the Folio in Navy, the Zada in Multi and the Boyce in Rose Smoke for an understated and elegant look.

Bedtime Brainteaser
Styling a bed with cushions is great fun as you have a wider surface area to work with. Here incorporate texture as well as prints in your chosen covers. A fluffy Mongolian in Wine looks luxurious when placed in front of the raised design on the Aztex cushions. Edging and bobbles also create a plush feel – combine finishes like those on the Marlia and Xeni cushions for a Boho room.

Prime Position
Your patio furniture cushions need to work extra hard. They have to be stylish as well as tough to stand up to lots of sun and wear. But well-chosen covers can really bring a sense of style and comfort to your entertaining space. Chair pads like the Lina in Oat create a great neutral base that will hide the odd spill. Add to this foundation a range of fun, seasonal colours and you’ve instantly created a bright welcoming area. We love the Inga in Yellow – just make sure you bring your cushions inside when it rains.

Old Chair New Tricks
We often forget our beloved armchairs when choosing cushions. You can instantly update a tired fabric with a modern print in a bright colour. Try the Lust cushion in Port on a grey upholstered chair with the rectangular, tasselled Barnwell in Yellow to create depth. If blocking colours isn’t for you, match a patterned cushion with a plain colour. The Folio in Green freshens up a cream armchair when placed with the Alfred cushion in Slate Grey.

Armed with these design tips, now is the time to freshen up you living or bedroom with a splash of colour and texture.
